The Best of Sam The Sham & the Pharaohs

4 stars

With the opening lines of “Uno! Dos! One, two, tres, quatro!” Texan Domingo Samudio fought back against the British Invasion in the mid 1960s. Performing with his band the “Pharaohs”, Samudio (better known as “Sam the Sham”) went to #2 with both “Wooly Bully” and their follow up hit “Lil’ Red Riding Hood”. Both those songs can be found on this 12 song CD from Mercury/UME. Also included in this collection are 4 top 40 songs, 2 top 100 singles and some amusing album cuts as well. This is a CD full of music that is “bubble gum for the brain” and that’s okay. As Sam says in the liner notes, “We weren’t making a statement. It was a time in our nation’s history when it needed something light.” Play it again Sam.
